Barry Manilow Will Have an Operation for Cancer in His Lung.

Barry Manilow announced that he was diagnosed with lung cancer and will undergo an operation.

Early-Stage Diagnosis

The 82-year-old singer, famous for his series of upbeat chart-toppers from "I Write the Songs" cemented his status as one of pop music’s cherished showmen, will have surgery to remove part of his lung in an effort to fight off the disease, which is detected early.

“As my fans are aware, I recently endured six weeks of bronchitis followed by a return of another five weeks.

“Although I was over the bronchitis and back on stage for my residency, my attentive medical team insisted on an MRI just to ensure that everything was OK.

“The MRI identified a cancerous spot on my left side that must be removed. It’s incredible chance (and a skilled doctor) that it was discovered so early.”

Concert Delays

He has rescheduled a string of planned shows, but suggested he would be returning to perform by the February holiday for his longstanding engagement in Las Vegas.

He went on to say: “The doctors do not believe it has metastasized and I’m having examinations to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemo. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just home remedies and classic TV.

“I’m counting the days until I return to my familiar venue in Las Vegas for our special weekend performances.”

Professional and Personal Journey

Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a residency at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the limelight and came out as gay in 2017, after wedding his manager and long-term partner confidentially in 2014.

The couple were in a clandestine relationship for more than 35 years. Recently, Manilow spoke about how crucial Kief had been to him during his ascent to stardom in the 1970s.

“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just crazy. And, you know, going back to an empty hotel room, you can land in a lot of difficulty if you, you know, you’re alone night after night,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I no longer had to go back to those isolated suites. I had somebody to share sorrows with or to enjoy success with.

“I desire that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those suites by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was quite isolating until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
