French authorities to begin intercepting migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official departed from office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
