New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, revealing he now intends to appear with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains strong support.

“It is crucial to really wake up the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this race is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has made headlines globally and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
