The Long-Awaited Lesson on Modding: Warframe's New Quest Fixes an Oversight
The space ninja adventure known as Warframe, an experience where you might encounter bizarre cosmic entities and pilot futuristic vehicles, has released a major update. The Vallis Undermind highlights the unique whimsy that has become synonymous with Warframe in more recent times.
The new content, released on Wednesday, brings in a new mushroom-themed warframe that does a little dance, along with a whole new explorable fungal area. But itâs also going back to basics, with another quest geared at making sure this complex, vast long-running online game is accessible for new players.
Introducing "The Teacher"
Named âThe Teacher,â this is the highly anticipated mission that trains Warframe players on how to use one of the game's fundamental yet complex systems: the mod system.
In Warframe, mods are augments that can be added to your character or your weapons to enhance their abilities. These can be simple (increase damage or speed up reload rate) to the incredibly intricate. Content creators often produce extensive guides about idealized builds that use powerful mods in combination to create devastating effects.
âMany players likely started their journey, seeing mods, not really understanding it,â noted a key developer. âI think it was really important, upon completing the mission, for players to think, âWow, modding is interesting. I want to try more of this.ââ
Teamwork in Action
âThe Teacherâ was developed in a collaboration between the core team, who provided the narrative sauce, and a supporting studio, who crafted the gameplay, which will be introduced to new players.
In the quest, the player is asked to retrieve a component for their ship, but theyâre interrupted by a menacing, powerful warrior called Teshin, who takes away the playerâs abilities and close-combat arms, and forces them to engage with the mod system to handily demonstrate its power.
Several developers were longtime players, but some were newcomers, according to a principal games designer. This fresh viewpoint that was essential.
âOur initial step involved observing new players and have them experience the introduction and take prodigious notes on everywhere they fell out,â the designer said. Introductory tutorials introduced players to modding. But the team noted that they didnât work on everyone.
âCertain players missed fundamental guidance where the game highlights it saying put the mod in the slot,â he said.
Closing an Important Loop
Warframeâs mods allow players to create stupidly powerful synergies that turn the screen into a blitz of numbers. But "The Teacher" focuses on different aspects. There will be some long-time players who desire more advanced content, like creating powerful and specific builds. But it became clear that the mission addresses a genuine oversight for early players â and that executing this is quite complex.
âNumerous subtle adjustments and background details there to just sort of show you what it can do rather than explain it outright,â the designer said. For example, one of the goals of âThe Teacherâ is to show how mods can create powerful elemental status effects; in this case, a magnetic effect that depletes protective barriers.
âWe had to change the weapon to be a rapid-fire gun, because it shows off the proc rate more,â the designer said. âBut you donât want to say to people, 'with a basic modification, you only got a few percentage chance to proc an elemental effect.' So how do you tutorialize that without changing it?â
Experienced players will naturally recognize these mechanics and grasp their function, but new players have to be taught to notice these details.
âItâs not a kind of game development that we previously focused on just because that hasn't been our focus,â said a story developer. âBut part of it not being our focus that players weren't properly taught the modding system.â
Months of Effort
âThereâs so much that goes into just making a really simple mission that â frankly â you can complete quickly,â said the designer. âBut it's months and months of work for many team members.â
The designer was visibly glowing with excitement over being able to work on a game that he loves â and to craft a mission for one of his favorite characters.
âI'm a huge fan of Teshin,â he said. âHe embodies everything my younger self found awesome.â
Improving the New Player Experience
In the decade-plus since launch, Warframe has been in a consistent battle with its own player onboarding process. There are many intricate mechanics that players can ignore initially â and won't encounter until much later. And others, like modding, that scale in complexity depending on your level of engagement. An update earlier this year streamlined the early game so that players could reach Warframeâs complex narrative arcs with reduced repetitive play up front.
With âThe Teacher,â itâs clear that the developers are reinforcing their dedication to make sure Warframeâs initial hours doesnât stay locked in 2013. New players can get their foot in the door â even if they miss the menu prompts.
